How NOT to overspend this holiday season

Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas it’s hard to get away without spending money on a holiday or ‘extras’ this coming season like food and wine. According to RBC Canadian Consumer Outlook Canadians plan to spend an average of $1192.50 these holidays.

Here are 4 tips for staying on budget:

  1. Set a limit – Decide on an amount your family can afford.
  2. Write down everything you plan to buy and remember to include items such as greeting cards, postage and shipping, wrapping paper and ribbons and travel costs.
  3. Use Cash or Debit cards
  4. Reap Rewards – If you are going to use a credit card consider using a credit card with cash back rewards. If you’re a big spender at a big retailer use their points card to maximize your reward.
